No-exam life insurance

Which people qualify for no-exam decisions, how the process works, and what happens if you don't qualify.

Most carriers now provide accelerated underwriting: for applicants in set age and amount bands, decisions come from application data, prescription databases, driving records and other information without needing a medical exam. Some decisions arrive the same business day. Every quote shown here notes whether an exam is required, possibly required, or not required for that product.

What it changes

Skipping an exam isn't skipping verification. Your statements get verified; misstated facts on issued policies are contestable in the first two years. The carrier's data might prompt a request for an exam or labs; you can decide then whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Candidates usually include those under about sixty applying for sums below the carrier's no-exam cap, with no major health concerns and no tobacco use within the past year or longer. When current medical exam results exist from a doctor visit with labs, some carriers take those in place of a paramedical exam.

Most exams take twenty to thirty minutes—a paramedical examiner visits your home or workplace in the Menlo Park area, with no charge. Healthy applicants sometimes see their rate class improve from exam results, so an exam can help rather than hurt.
